HI, I'M JANAE

I can't wait to capture your next gathering, grocery store trip, or a coffee with a friend. Documentary-style photography is for all-types of people, but especially those who value meaning over beauty. You don't have to be a family with little kids to want to document your life. Family is so much more than parents and children, it is the people you chose to make meaningful connections with.

We're making a cozy 650 square-foot haven spread across two levels our home, and let me tell you, cramped doesn't even begin to cover it. This means my options for capturing those candid moments with our kids on our main floor are, well, limited. It's essentially the same view on repeat – and that view? It's mainly our trusty old couch. The first floor is like a compact story – you walk in through the front door, bam, there's the couch, a small dining table snuggled up to it, and right next to that, the humble kitchen. That's the whole shebang.

Now, do I find shooting our kids in this space a tad repetitive? Absolutely. It can feel like navigating a maze, and the lighting? Let's just say it doesn't exactly win any photography awards.

But, here's the thing – that couch, in all its worn-out glory, is woven into the fabric of their early childhood memories. So, despite the constraints, I make it a point to document every bit of action that unfolds on it – the playtime shenanigans, the TV marathons, and even those work-from-home moments. Because in the end, it's not just about the space; it's about the life we're living within it.

IT'S JUST A COUCH

Some ways that I keep the inspiration is to adjust the way I shoot in the direction of the couch:
  • to see if from their view and try and capture new perspectives by getting low.
  • to capture them exposed from various angles
  • capture it by creating backlighting and silhouettes
  • capture it from outside
  • capture movement on it
  • capture different activities happening by it and on it

"If I can give you any advice, it's this: every hour that you spend sat on the couch doing nothing, put it to good use, because when you have kids, an hour is like a lifetime."
