HI, I'M JANAE

I can't wait to capture your next gathering, grocery store trip, or a coffee with a friend. Documentary-style photography is for all-types of people, but especially those who value meaning over beauty. You don't have to be a family with little kids to want to document your life. Family is so much more than parents and children, it is the people you chose to make meaningful connections with.

LET's DO THIS

Untold Stories Now Told With Photos: How Documentary Family Photography Shows the Stories You Never Knew You Needed Photographed & A Morning With the L. Family

Family

In the realm of family photography, there exists a genre that goes beyond the traditional posed portraits and staged smiles. It’s a style that captures the essence of everyday life, the unscripted moments, and the genuine emotions shared between family members. This style is known as documentary family photography, and it has the power to unveil untold stories that would otherwise remain unnoticed or forgotten. These are the types of stories that would likely not have had the opportunity to be beautifully documented in a traditional posed portrait session.

Documentary family photography is more than just taking pictures; it’s about storytelling. It’s about freezing moments in time that may seem ordinary at first glance but hold profound significance when viewed through the lens of memory. In essence, it’s about celebrating the beauty of real life – the messy, chaotic, and imperfect moments that make up the tapestry of family life.

One of the most remarkable aspects of documentary family photography is its ability to capture the fleeting moments that often go unnoticed in the hustle and bustle of daily life. From the little messes at snack time to the quiet moments of assembling legos in a bedroom, these seemingly mundane moments are the threads that weave the fabric of family life. Documentary photographers have a keen eye for spotting these moments and preserving them for posterity.

But it’s not just about capturing the highlights; documentary family photography also embraces the imperfections and challenges that come with family life. It’s about capturing the tantrums and the tears, the messes and the meltdowns – because these moments, too, are part of the story. They are the moments that reveal our humanity, our vulnerability, and our capacity for love and resilience.

Documentary family photography is also about honoring the unique dynamics and relationships within each family unit. It’s about capturing the bonds between siblings, the love between parents and children, and the connections that transcend words. These images serve as a visual legacy, reminding us of the love and laughter that have filled our lives and shaped who we are. You just can’t pose that.

Documentary family photography is more than just a style of photography – it’s a celebration of small stories in your life. So the next time you’re considering a family photo shoot, consider opting for documentary style photography. You may be surprised at the stories it reveals – stories you never knew you needed photographed.

A documentary family photo session in Fairfax, VA

A short 2 hour session at Ashley and Steven’s home with their two children in the morning revealed so many precious family stories I had the honor to capture. Dog walks, lego play, snack time, and even COSTCO on a Sunday gave us a deep view of their family connection. So many little story lines- a super hero building his own city, a mom with a baby on her back, and a dad chilling with his baby, snacks and dog walks, and shopping cart surfing at the grocery store: I had so much fun working with this adorable and fun family.
